[edit] Bullet points

Is there any way to create double columns for bullet points?-Muckblogger —Preceding unsigned comment added by Muckblogger (talk • contribs) 15:12, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Color

Is there a way to add color to text in wikiformatting?

[edit] Bold and italics

Italicize titles, for example, The Lord of the Rings. If your paper ry, put new terms in bold face. For example, internet. An automobile is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own motor. Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli, popularly known as Fonzie, was a fictional character in the American sitcom Happy Days (1974-1984) played by Henry Winkler.

[edit] Heh? What's markup?

I think this is a kind of markup that is easier for people who get intimidated by XML which is what <this> </this> <is/> . Another problem with markup, that this wiki-style of markup may or may not fix is encapsulation..

Problems people experience with table tags in traditional HTML

. I edit my web pages in pure HTML with VIM, so HTML is not a major problem for me. But there is the concern about filtering text and keeping the users from breaking the framework if any HTML should get through.. Also there is a readability issue with HTML.. I suppose to some, HTML looks like code, but a programmers concept of code is not the same. HTML is markup that the web browser can parse and display graphically. I've written language parsers, did s]] that you learn how to write a parser in lex/yacc. Anyhow, C++/C are compileable lnguages, HTML is a interpretive language, and its not even a language.. So know your place in the food chain.. Kidding.. --Kiernan 02:23, 27 Jul 2005 (MST)

Formally (de jure), the HTML is a language, for two reasons: 1) it has a grammar; 2) by defeninion (ML stands for Markap Language). This compromises your CS courses and once more time supports the thesis that C/C++ misleads programmers from the right way of thinking. --Javalenok 11:28, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Is <font color/> pseudo-HTML or is that supposed to be real HTML? If it isn't wiki-specific code, <span style="color: ..."/> would be a better alternative (although it isn't perfect either). The article is a bit unclear about this. --Ashmodai 09:18, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

FYI. I don't think I'm up to it tonite, but I think I'm going to move the various indentation methods from the Talk pages Tutorial article to here--they're universal, and I want to add some stuff to the Talk Tutorial page, but I don't want to make it too big/complicated. Niteowlneils 04:47, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I guess the original reason I put these subjects in the talk pages article was that talk pages are where people are most likely to need indenting. Keep in mind that this is a tutorial, not a manual. The important thing is to organize by how a newbie will use things, not by how they're most properly classified. Also keep the purpose in mind when you add new material here. We're not out to be comprehensive. That's what the rest of the Wikipedia namespace pages are for. There's already stuff in the tutorial that I don't think really needs to be here (how many newbs need to know about interlanguage links?) Isomorphic 05:10, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I guess we do have a bit of disagreement on the organization. I should point out that my grouping suggestions aren't based on simply classification, they're because I believe my teacher friends have told me that retention is better if 'like' things are presented together (maybe I should double-check with them). Also, with these specifically, I think at least the asterisk should appear by page 5, because I think we should show them the proper formatting of an external links footer. (FWIW, I use indents far more in t

he article space (well, and VfD), but that's probably because I spend VERY little time on talk pages). Anyway, enuf of that. I think we do pretty much agree on what and how to present topics. I'm fairly sure I wouldn't have mentioned the other language 'pedias, and probably not the Meta. The only reason I mentioned Wiktionary was because I wanted to tell them to not enter dic defs, but, if I did that, I felt I should mention the alternative. I mentioned Wikisource for basically the same reason, tho' since that's so much less of a problem (and the title isn't very obvious), I've been thinking of removing it. I purposely didn't mention all the other sister projects because I agree it shouldn't try to be comprehensive. I'm also not sure a newbie needs to know about every name space, and maybe not even the term "namespace"--that page kinda ended up with a different flavor than the rest--IIRC it's the biggest, and it's kinda esoteric and jargony. One thing I've been thinking about to make the transition easier is to gently introduce the term/concept of namespace (if it's even necessary to have the term in this Tutorial) at the top of the Talk page article, as the distinction is more obviously relevant in that context than most of the others, so it may be easier to grasp. Either that, or maybe just mostly or entirely just call them "spaces", and/or emphasize the pairing (in my mind there are 5 'namespaces' and each has a Talk equivalent). I do think it's good to mention User/User Talk pages, but I think the rest of the namespaces page could be trimmed a bit--Article/Article Talk has already been covered, and I'm not sure the other three pairs need so much detail. I just haven't concluded how, or how much, to trim. Niteowlneils 05:59, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I don't know if we actually disagree on organization or not, but such discussion should probably wait until we've decided what material is going to stay and what's going to be shortened or omitted. I definitely want to cut the namespaces page down. My view of the tutorial is that it only needs to give people enough to get them started. In many cases I think it's enough to tell them in general terms what something is so that they recognize it when they see it, and let them look up the details if it interests them. That goes for interlanguage links, interwiki links, and the Mediawiki namespace for sure. Isomorphic 19:26, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Would it be possible to add on this page a small list of which HTML codes are supported by the Wiki formatting editor? Also, I see on the next page of the tutorial that the * will make bullets, but it's mentioned in passing, not as a formatting example. I would imagine that a bit longer list of the easier HTML format equivalents should be listed on this page. Then as I progressed through the tutorial, I find that the best list of formatting commands is actually on the "Talk Pages" page. I think they should be moved to the "Formatting" tutorial page. The page is about "Formatting" after all - I was going to skip the talk page tutorial :) Modnar 21:34, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Subject bolded

The articles states: "It is a Wikipedia convention to bold the subject of an article when it is first mentioned in the article..."
Just wondering, is this convention outlined in any Wiki pages that could be linked to? I thought it might be helpful.

[edit] Bold and italics grammar is apostrophe-umbigous

I cannot find any guidelines to writing expressions like (a'), where the a is a variable; thus, must be italicized. Should the HTML tag be used instead of double apostrophe? Shoud there be a recommendadion to use primes in equations? --Javalenok 11:28, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Start of Elizabeth II article

The tutorial says that the article on Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom starts:

"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor), styled HM The Queen (born 21 April 1926) is the Queen regnant...."

It actually now starts:

"Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor), born 21 April 1926, is Queen of sixteen independent nations ...."

Accordingly, should the tutorial be changed to include a different example?

[edit] "Queen Regent"

Queen Regent: Elizabeth is the Queen Regnant of the UK, and assorted territories. Regent would imply that she were ruling in the place of a living, but incapacitated monarch, such as the regency period in Great Britain when George IV ruled in place of his mad father, George III. Regnant means that she is ruling in her own right.--King Hildebrand 18:59, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Queen Regent This distinction is correctly rendered in the entry on ER II.--King Hildebrand 19:04, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nihal Singh Kairon

Was born on 22 December 1863 at Kairon, a village in Amritsar district. His father, Gulab Singh, a deeply religious person, had three sons, Nihal Singh being the youngest of them. Nihal Singh had no formal schooling, and travelled with his brother, Tarlok Singh, to Malaya (Malaysia) while still very young. He joined the Royal Artillery at Hong Kong, but soon secured his release and returned to his village in the Punjab to work for community welfare and reform. He became a leader of the Singh Sabha movement. He founded a boys' school in his village and took a leading. part in establishing a Sikh society called Majha Khalsa Diwan. The first meeting of the Diwan, held on 17-19 February 1905 at Tarn Taran, was largely attended by people from all parts of the Punjab. A concrete outcome of this conclave was a girls' school established at Kairon. The girls school was a novelty in the area and the founder, Nihal Singh, encountered considerable opposition, but he persisted with his plans and in May 1913 laid the cornerstone of a boarding house for girls as well. This was the first girls school in North India. Accompanied by Baba Dial Singh and a group of students from his school, Nihal Singh visited Malaya, Hong Kong and Shanghai to raise funds for the school and the hostel attached to it.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, ruler of the princely state of Patiala, performed, on 14 March 1916, the opening ceremony of the hostel which celebrating the name of a member of the Patiala family was called Mata Sahib Kaur Bhujhangan Ashram. Nihal Singh also instituted at the school an annual women's conference which became an active agent of social reform.

Bhai Nihal Singh died on 20 November 1928. One of his sons, Pratap Singh Kairon, took active part in India's struggle for freedom, and won renown as a political leader.

[edit] Lyss & Manda

Just so all of you seniors and anyone younger...who don't understand..we do what we need to do to enjoy ourselves, whether you approve or not. If you don't approve, than you obviously weren't good friends anyways because anyone who was a good friend against us with only 5 days of high school left can only blame themselves for not living life to the fullest and not having fun. We have fun yet get good grades and attend all classes so nothing bad can even be said about our academic achievements. Can't wait to see you all at graduation and parties..

for those who are for us....thanks for all the memories...love you and seee you very soon :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alyssamanda (talk • contribs) 04:56, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
